SUBMISSIONS GUIDELINES

2020 Sofia Piano Competition International

 Rules and Regulations

 

ELIGIBILITY

1. The Sofia Piano Competition International is open to pianists of all nationalities.

2.  There are six age levels as follows:

  • Beginning Artist (9 - 12)

  • Young Artist (13 - 17)

  • Junior Artist (18 - 22)

  • Senior Artist (23 - 27)

  • Emerging Artist (28 - 32)

  • Professional (33 and older)

3.  The age level for which you apply to is contingent on the day you complete your application. (The age in which you complete your application is the age level you will compete).

COMPETITIVE CATEGORIES:

  • Solo Category - (see solo audition requirements section for guidelines)

  • Concerto Category - (see concerto audition requirements section for guidelines)

  • Submission for both categories - (you may submit for both categories)

GENERAL INFORMATION:

1.   The 2020 Sofia Piano Competition International will be held from August 25th to August 31st, 2020 in Sofia, Bulgaria. 

2.  Participation in live rounds are contingent on the prescreening recordings.

3.  The prescreening application period will begin September, 15th 2019 and end May 25th, 2020.

4.  Finalists will be notified by June 1st, 2020. 

5.  All finalists will receive an all expense paid trip to Sofia, Bulgaria.  This includes: transportation, housing, and food.

6.  The competition reserves the right, without payment of fees, to record and distribute recordings for media and other purposes, including the Internet and mobile phones, and other technologies not yet developed; and to televise, broadcast, film, record, videotape, photograph or live stream all stages of the competition, prize performances, and concerts.

7.   By applying to the competition, the applicant agrees to abide by all rules and regulations of the Sofia International Piano Concerto Competition.

8.   The Competition reserves the right to make any necessary changes as circumstances dictate.

HOUSING/TRANSPORTATION/FOOD

 - Winners of both the concerto and solo category will receive an all expense paid trip to Sofia which will include: airfare, housing, and food.  Finalists will be contacted regarding the arrangements for travel by June 13th.

 

PRESCREEN REQUIREMENTS:

ALL SUBMITTED RECORDINGS MUST BE AUDIO AND VIDEO OF THE BEST POSSIBLE QUALITY. THE VIDEO MUST SHOW THE CONTESTANTS HANDS AND FEET CLEARLY. ALL WORKS MUST BE PERFORMED FROM MEMORY.

 

SOLO AUDITION REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS

Beginning Artist / Young Artist: 10-25 minutes total

  • A minimum of two contrasting works that best demonstrates their artistic abilities 

Junior Artist / Senior Artist / Emerging Artist / Professional Artist: 25-35 minutes total

  • A minimum of two contrasting works that best demonstrates their artistic abilities 

 

CONCERTO AUDITION REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS

Beginning Artist / Young Artist: No time limit

  • A single movement of a concerto performed with piano or orchestra accompaniment

  • If an applicant is unable to play with piano/orchestra accompaniment, they should play ALL solo parts of the concerto unaccompanied

Junior Artist / Senior Artist / Emerging Artist / Professional Artist: No time limit

  • A single movement of a concerto.  

LIVE ROUND REPERTOIRE

 

Solo category:

Beginning Artist / Young Artist:

Free repertoire solo program lasting 20-30 minutes. The program should contain at least 2 contrasting styles. Works do not need to be the same as pre-screen round, but is permitted.

Junior Artist / Senior Artist / Emerging Artist / Professional Artist:

Free repertoire solo program lasting 40-50 minutes. The program should contain at least 2 contrasting styles. Works do not need to be the same as pre-screen round, but can be.

Concerto Category:

Beginning Artist / Young Artist:

A single movement of any piano piano concerto of the contestants choice. The concerto will be performed with a second piano.

Junior Artist / Senior Artist / Emerging Artist / Professional Artist:

A full piano concerto of the contestants choice. 

RULES FOR APPLICATION

1.     The Application Deadline for the 2020 Sofia Piano Concerto Competition International is May 25th, 2020.  

2.     Those who pass the pre-screening round will be asked for the following:

a.     Proof of age (photocopy of birth certificate or passport) – Do not send originals

b.     Non-refundable application fee

c.     An unedited audition audio/video accompanied by a list of the included repertoire.

d.     A short 100 word biography

e.     A headshot

f.      Teacher information

g.     Parent information & signature (for those under 18)

h.     Application fee  

THE NUMBER OF ADMITTED APPLICANTS FOR THE LIVE ROUND IS BASED ON THE DISCRETION OF THE JURY
